Motivation
The direction and intensity of effort
Amotivation
A complete absence of motivation. Lack of attraction to an activity
Intrinsic motivation
An internal source of motivation from within the body/ activity. For example, fun, pleasure, enjoyment, self-mastery, feel-good factor, sense of accomplishment, learning
Extrinsic motivation
Comes from sources outside the body/ activity. For example, recognition, praise, approval of coach, friend, family, crowd. Trophies, medals, prizes, records, money
Motivational environment
Conditions that make the athlete feel motivated
Positive coaching
Praise, enthusiasm, good-quality feedback and positivity
Negative coaching
Lack of praise, low enthusiasm, negative feedback and general negativity
Mastery climate
Participants are encouraged to master skills and receive positive reinforcement
Competitive climate
Participants are encouraged to focus on the outcome and mistakes are punished
Influence of parents and peers
Positive/ negative influence on participation in sport through role modelling, social influence and social support
Influence of personality- trait theory
Personality is made up of traits (characteristics) thats are relatively consistent. An individual is either motivated or not
Influence of personality- social learning theory
Personality is learned through modelling behaviour on other people and through reinforcement
Influence of the physical
Modern facilities with up to date equipment and comfortable changing
Environment on motivation
rooms are more motivating than old run down facilities
Over motivation
when an individual has unrealistically high goals or their behaviour changes because they want to achieve something so much that they work towards it in an obsessive way
