Motivation & Emotion Flashcards
Motivation
Factors that direct and energize the behavior of humans/ other organisms.
Instinct Approaches
Inborn patterns of behavior, biological, determined rather than learned.
Essential for survival.
Drive reduction approaches
Lacking a biological need (water) produces a drive (thirst) to obtain that need.
Drive
Motivational tension/arousal that energizes behavior to fulfill a need
Primary (homeostasis, steady internal state) v secondary drives
Arousal approaches
Maintain certain levels of stimulation and activity, increase/decrease as needed
Individuals have different optimal levels. Sensory seekers v sensory avoiders
Incentive approaches
Motivation stems from desire to obtain goal
Cognitive (thoughts and expectations, beliefs and goals) approach to motivation
Intrinsic motivation: enjoyment, activity is a reward
Extrinsic motivation: doing something for a reward
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (humanistic)
Primary needs must be met before higher-order needs can be satisfied.
- Physiological needs/primary drives
- Safety needs
- Love and belonging
- Esteem
- Self actualization
