Motivation and emotion (class 1) Flashcards
Motivation
The driving force within individuals that impels them to action
i.e hunger thirst, sex, escape, money, power
What produces emotion?
Produced by a state of arousal or tension, which exists as the result of an unfulfilled need
Individuals strive consciously and subconsciously to reduce the tension through behavior they anticipate will fulfill their needs and thus relieve the stress they feel
What brain structure regulates basic biological needs and motivational systems?
The hypothalamus
Motives
The needs, wants, interests, and desires that propel or drive people in certain directions
A stimulus that moves a person to behave in ways designed to accomplish a specific goal
Theoretical (cannot be observed or measure directly)
Motives can be
- Conscious vs unconscious
- High vs Low urgency
- Positive and negative
- Intrinsic vs extrinsic
- Rational vs Emotional
Drive reduction theory
We are motivated to restore homeostasis when a drive emerges
Homeostasis (and motivation)
Individuals are attempting to maintain a level of psychological homeostasis or equilibrium
Push vs Pull theory
- Internal states of tension push people in certain directions
- External stimuli pull people in certain directions
Arousal
The level of alertness, wakefulness and activation caused by activity in the CNS
Yerkes-Dodson Law
We usually preform most activities best when we are moderately aroused
Challenge - Moderately low level
Easy - Moderately high level
Evolutionary perspective
Social bonds were/are important for survival and reproduction
Social connectedness
A good predictor of our overall health
Loneliness
Elevates a person’s risk for having hypertension, a weaker immune system and high levels of stress hormones
According to humanistic psychologists
Instinct and drive - reduction theories are too mechanical and fails to account for all human motivation
Abraham maslow suggests (some people are…)
Some people are willing to tolerate pain, hunger, and other kinds of tension to achieve their artistic or personal goals
