Primary appraisal
Evaluate potentially stressful event and how it
affects well-being.
Secondary appraisal
Evaluating one’s coping resources and how to deal with stressful event
Lazarus and Folkman’s Psychological Model of Stress
The stress response depends on the outcome of the primary and secondary appraisals, whether the person’s coping resources are adequate to cope with the threat, and how severely the resources are taxed in the process.
Problem based coping
Attempts to tackle the problem head on - reducing, modifying, eliminating source(s) of stress.
Emotion focused coping
Dealing with one’s feelings about the stressful event - changing emotional responses
Emotional resilience
Emotional resilience is defined as being able to overcome stressors or endure negative life events while finding personal meaning in such experiences

Personal, social, & institutional resources that foster competence
& promote successful development
