Motivation and Emotion Flashcards
What is intrinsic theory?
Theory that human behavior is motivated by instinct or innate tendencies. Mostly rejected tho b/c ppl are toooooo diverse
What is Drive reduction theory?
theory of motivation saying that a need creates a unpleasant state of arousal or tension called a drive. Causes them to engage in behavior that will satisfy need or tension
What is arousal theory?
theory that aim of motivation is to maintain optimal level of arousal ie. state of alertness and mental and physical activation
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
The theory of motivation that arranges needs in order of urgency
Name the levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Physiological needs: food, water etc Safety needs: security belongingness/love needs esteem needs self actualization
What is the lateral hypothalamus responsible for?
feeding center to excite eating. Can even eat when full
What is the ventromedial hypothalamus responsible for?
Satiety center. Tells you when you’re full. Destroy this and you’ll overeat
What is fat-cell theory?
fatness is related to number of fat cells in body
What is set point theory?
Humans and other mammals are genetically programmed to carry a certain amount of weight. If weight falls below normal, appetite increases and metabolic rate decreases. Weight is gained, reverse happens
What are social motives?
Motives gained through experience and interaction with others. Affiliation for example. Or need for achievement
What is Atkinson’s theory of achievement motivation?
There are 2 conflicting forces that are happening when we approach any situation. Hope for success and our fear of failure
What are 3 components of emotion
1) physical: physiological arousal
2) cognitive: how we interpret stimulus
3) behavioral: expression of emotion
What is James-Lange theory of emotion?
An event causes physiological arousal and emotion is experienced after we interpret the response. Ie. hearing something and feeling fear. When heart goes pound, you then interpret that as fear
What is Cannon-Bard theory of emotion?
An event causes physical and emotional responses at the same time. Ie. hear something and heart pounds, at the same time you feel scared
What is Schacter-Singer theory of emotion?
There must be physiological arousal, then interpretation of arousal
ie. hear something, heart pounds, you feel it’s an intruder, so you get scared
