What are nonsense syllables?
Consonant vowel consonant combinations that don’t even make a word. Used to control for meaning of material
What is the serial position effect?
Remembering words in a list of words. But they mostly in the beginning and end
What is the primacy effect?
Remembering the first few words in a list of words
What is the recency effect?
Remembering the last few words in a list of words
Why do people not remember the middle words as much?
B/c ppl tend to repeat the first few words more often
What is disuse theory?
We stop using info, it fades
What is proactive interference?
When old info interferes w/new info staying
What is retroactive interference?
When new info interferes w/ old
What is autobiographical memory?
Memory of events and facts about yourself
What is anterograde amnesia?
Memory loss from injury. Can’t form new long term memories
What is echoic?
brief memory of something a person just heard
What is selective attention?
Focusing on one stimulus at a time
What is explicit memory?
Memory that’s consciously known. AKA declarative memory
What is iconic memory?
Visual sensory memory. Lasts a fraction of a second
What is decay?
Loss of memory during passage of time
