Financial methods of motivation
Things like
Commission, Bonuses,Profit sharing (employees get a share of the profits), piece rate etc
Non financial methods of motivation
Things like
Designing the job in a more interesting way, Job rotation, Team working, Flexible working etc
Taylors scientific management theory
-Find the most efficient way of working and get everyone to adopt that
-Paid for carrying out tasks not thinking
-Piece rate payments
Mayos human relations theory
Motivation is promoted by: Good communication, teamwork, showing interest, non repetitive work, shared decision making etc
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
Herzberg’s Two factor theory
1)Hygiene factors (like working conditions) don’t increase motivation but workers need them to be acceptable or they’ll leave
2)Motivators (like opportunity for promotion) make people work harder when improved
Vroom’s expectancy theory
People act in their best interests
1)Valence- will they receive a worthwhile reward for their work
2)Instrumentality- will their work lead to a particular result they desire
3)Expectancy- Is it possible for them to achieve the target
Porter and lawler
Motivation is affected by the reward you expect to receive for the task
Intrinsic- experience like finding the task interesting and rewarding
Extrinsic- reward coming from someone else like a bonus or pay rise
