the distance a movable object may normally travel when attached to another
active motion
motion done by the muscles on their own
passive motion
the motion created by an outside force to move appendages/limbs that are unable to do it themselves
flexion
movement to decrease the angle of an appendage at the joint
extension
movement to increase the angle of an appendage at the joint
abduction or protraction
movement away the from longitudinal axis
adduction or retraction
movement back towards the longitudinal axis
cirucumduction
circular motion which creates a cone like shape
lateral rotation
rotation away from the middle of the body
medial rotation
movement towards the middle of the body
supination
occurs in the forearm, twisting the hand so the palm is facing upwards
pronation
occurs in the forearm, twisting the hand so the palm is facing downwards
dorsiflexion
the flexion of the foot upwards (toes up)
plantar flexion
flexion of the foot downwards (toes down)
eversion
plantar surface of the foot turns outwards (laterally)
