Motion and Time Studies Flashcards
Definition of a motion study
Study of body motions employed in performing a job to develop the most efficient work method
Definition of a time study
Study of time it takes to complete components of an activity to redesign processes by reducing bottlenecks and eliminating necessary waste
Purpose of motion time studies
- To develop an efficient system and method
- Standardize this system and method
- Determine the time required to do this method.
- Assist in training worker for this method.
Taylorism
Eliminated idle time and duplication of effort and reduced jobs to short repetitive cycles with systematic skills. Make workers act like robots.
Therbligs
Basic motions of the human body to help categorize tasks and predict times.
Time study results
Normal time: elapsed elemental time normalized by performance rating
Standard time: normal time normalized by allowance factors
Performance rating
A weighting factor based on
- Skill
- Effort
- Conditions
- Consistency
Allowance factors
A weighting factor based on
- Personal delays (i.e. bathroom)
- Fatigue
- Unavoidable delays (i.e. cleaning up)
Predetermined time study
We break down the task into basic components and can predict how long it should take and design around that ahead of time.
Work sampling
Used for ill defined or non-repetitive tasks; breaks workers job into % of time spent on each larger task (i.e. in meetings, on the phone, taking breaks)
