Motion Flashcards
What is speed
A measure of the distance travelled by an object in a unit of time
Speed equation
Speed = distance / time
What is velocity
Speed of an object, with a given direction
Scalar quantities
Only have a size (mass, temp, energy)
Vector quantities
Only have a size and direction (weight)
What is acceleration
Refers to change in velocity / the rate of change of velocity per unit of time
Acceleration equation
Acceleration = change in velocity / time taken
V= u+at
U=v-at
T=v-u/a
Change in velocity =
Final velocity - initial velocity
What is the unit for acceleration
Measured in m/s^2
On velocity time graphs what is the distance travelled
‘Area under line’
Final speed equation
(Final speed)^2=(initial speed)^2 + (2 x acceleration x distance)
Distance time graph
Straight up = constant speed
Speed time graph
Straight up = acceleration
Force is a …….. quantity
Vector
Force equation
Force = mass x acceleration
F= ma
Mass in Kg
What happens if there is no resultant force
The object does not accelerate (remains stationary or at a constant velocity)
What is the acceleration of a falling object with no air resistance
10m/s^2
In the absence of air resistance
Every mass will accelerate at 10 metres per second
Falling objects with air resistance
All resistive forces increase the faster the object is moving
What is terminal velocity
The maximum velocity attainable by an object as it falls through a fluid
Factors affecting terminal velocity
Weight
Shape (greater area will have a larger resistance)
