Motion Flashcards
What is displacement ?
The distance travelled in a specific direction
What is velocity ?
The speed of an object in a specific direction
What is the equation that links average speed, distance and time?
S=d/t
What is the purpose and benefit of taking multiple readings ?
Calculate a mean, reduce ransom errors
How do you find the total distance travelled ?
Read off Y-axis
What does a constant speed look like on a d-t graph?
A straight line
What does a curved line on a d-t graph describe about the motion of an object ?
That the object is accelerating
What is the equation that links acceleration, final velocity, initial velocity and time?
v=u+at
a= (v-u)/t
What equation links displacement, final velocity, initial velocity and time ?
S=1/2(u+v)t
What does area under the graph shows?
Displacement
What feature of a v-t graph shows constant acceleration?
Shown by a straight line
How do you find acceleration from a v-t graph ?
Calculating the gradient
Acceleration=?
Acceleration= change in Y/ change in X
How do you find distance travelled on a d-t and v-t graphs ?
d-t read of Y-axis
v-t area under graph
How do you find speed on a d-t and v-t graphs ?
d-t gradient of line
v-t read of the Y-axis
How do you find acceleration on a d-t and v-t graphs ?
d-t look at the curve
steeper= acceleration
shallower= deceleration
v-t gradient of line
What is acceleration?
The rate of change of velocity
What are the unit for acceleration.
m/s2
What does m/s2 mean in words ?
1m/s2 means an increase in the velocity of an object by 1m/s each second
Equation for acceleration?
Acceleration= change in velocity/time taken
a=(v-u)t
What does it mean if an object has a negative acceleration?
It means it is decelerating
What is happening to the velocity of an object if it’s decelerating?
This means it’s slowing down, its velocity is decreasing
Units for deceleration ?
m/s2 (same for acceleration)
How do you calculate stopping distance?
Stopping distance =thinking distance+ braking distance
What is thinking distance?
Travelled distance whilst reacting to obstacle
What factors will increase/ decrease thinking distance?
Increase- tiredness, alcohol, distractions
Decrease- caffeine
What is braking distance?
Travelled distance whilst applying the brakes
What factors will increase the braking distance?
Icy/wet road, old brakes, overloaded car
What can force change about an object ?
Shape, speed, direction
What equation that links gravitational field strength, mass and weight ?
Weight= mass x gfs
What is gravitational field strength measured in?
N/kg
On earth, g=10N/kg
How do you find speed from a distance time graph?
Gradient
What is a scalar?
It has size (magnitude) only
What is a vector ?
It has both magnitude and direction
Example of scalar?
Mass
Energy
Distance
Speed
Temperature
Time
Example of a vector?
Force
Velocity
Acceleration
Displacement
