Mother fucking problem behaviours Flashcards
Agitation – can be
verbal, vocal, or motor, either
aggressive or non-aggressive,
always
inappropriate or excessive, and negatively affect the person or others.
Agitated behaviours and limited communication skills may put the person with dementia at risk for
inadequate
assessment and treatment.
Agitated behaviours increase the probability of
caregiver burden
it s an indicator of
nursing home placement
Leads to (2)
falls and often restraint
agitation loop
Physical restraint = more agitation = chemical restraint = gait impairment, falls, anorexia, sedation, hypotension, diminished cognitive function, = more agitation
Identification of antecedents to problem behaviours and prompt appropriate intervention can help the individual to continue to communicate and function effectively.
*
Four types of antecedents –
– patient factors,
– environmental factors
– interpersonal relation factors,
– restraints or medication.
Authors listed….
Cognitive impairment,
Sensory impairment (bathing, feeding, touching agitations);
Physiological (pain, infection, dehydration, constipation);
Personality and psychiatric (depression, psychosis,
anxiety)
Drug effects (too much, too many, withdrawal
What about the environment….. Relationships with
staff and others…..
Three types of interventions:
– behavioural approaches
– environmental modifications
– pharmacologic solutions.
Behavioural 4
Determine type of agitation, – frequency, duration, severity; Identify antecedents & prevent * Consider basic needs * Address communication * Foster autonomy and sense of control
Environmental
Familiar, constant, predictable * Objects or labels to orientate * Photos from earlier years r/t LT memory * Simple familiar activities, keep it simple – fucking * * Diversion and a sense of belonging * Music to soothe, entertain, socialize, invite others in
Pain - what can be pivotal?
Proper use of analgesics can be pivotal
…. Often
agitation is due to
joint pain due to arthritis
Examples of analgesics
Entrophen 650, tylenol, NSAIDs work well, be
careful about protecting gastric systems;
*
Remember alternatives - warmth (sweater, cup of
tea, a throw, hot water bottle); distraction (a chat,
music, a picture book); relaxation …
