Mother Boards Flashcards
Form Factors
Industry standards for mobo cases and components
I/O area
Where all the input and outputs are located
ATX form factor
Biggest common form factor, 12x9.6in
Micro ATX
9.6x9.6 in
Mini ITX
Used in smaller systems
Chipsets
Determine everything about computer
Combine functions from many single function chips
Defines RAM capacity, USB capacity, and more
North bridge
Takes care of the fast stuff, cpu communication and high speed expansion buses
Todays CPUs take over all the north bridge functions
South bridge
Slower stuff, individual ports etc
Choosing the right motherboard
Consider mobo compatibility, is it for a desktop or laptop? Does it need multi socket like for a server?
Type of CPU, form factor, and extra RAM capacity are all important to consider when choosing new mobo
ESD Strap
Electrostatic discharge strap,helps
Ground static
Stand offs
Gives clearance between case and mobo to prevent shorting
Installing mobo
- Install stand offs
- Install IO shield
- Slid in mobo
- Start tightening screws, partially tighten all screws then go back and finish
Installing cpu and heat sink be for installing mobo is easier
Capacity swelling
Remove power, defective mobo, causes burning smell
