Firmware Flashcards
BIOS
Basic Input Output services
• allows interaction with mobo before os loads
• used instead of drivers for the motherboard to communicate with built in devices
• code, firmware that is burned onto a chip
Backup BIOS
Extra chip in case the first one is damaged
POST
Power on self test
Internal diagnostic to make sure everything is ready to start up
Requests devices self check
CMOS
Small battery powered memory chip that stores the BIOS settings
Post beep
Let’s you know everything in computer is functioning and good for start up
• has different beeps if different things are wrong
POST card
Plugs in and reads out the a code to let you know if and what is wrong
All codes are in the motherboard book
UEFI
Unified extensible firmware interface
New more advanced BIAS
Replaces traditional 16 bit BIOS
System setup
Change part of the BIAS
Place to make changes to CPU frequencies, RAM timing, BIOS password, boot options, and more
PROM
Programmable read only memory
Single flash ROM chip
Currently being used for firmware
Read only memory but it can be “flashed” reprogrammed
RTC
Real time clock
CMOS Battery
Powers RTC
If the battery dies all system information disappears
Flashing the ROM
•updates the firmware on flash hip
• make sure you won’t lose power while doing it
•make sure you have a complete copy of the update
• make sure you know why you’re doing it
• ex sometimes needed for new cpu
