melodic vs harmonic interval
melodic: played separately.
harmonic: played together.
simple vs compound interval
simple: smaller than an octave. compound: bigger

how to calculate an interval: steps
- write a generic interval on the staff
- go to keyboard, count the half steps
- add accidentals to staff so 1 and 2 match.

root position: base note is root
first inv: base note is third
second inv: base note is fifth
(third inv: base note is 7th)
