Q

What system regulates mos flight tone

A

Circadian rhythym
Male increase flight tone around dusk time from 750 → 844 Hz

While female increase to 556hz.

7
Q

How does male mos increase flight tone?

A
  • Fibrillae erection helps detect faint sounds at dusk
  • Sexually dimorphic sound receiver

Q

How do mosquitos hear?

A

antenna- sound reciver which is equivelent to our ear drums.

sound receiver of the mos use air particles velocities which cuaes virbaition in frigella- moves and exites neruons in the johnson organ

Q

What are the 4 male-specific behaviours?

A
  • Modulate sound receiver (conformation and oscillation)
  • ↑ Wing beat frequency
  • Harness distortion products
  • Attracted to female sounds specifically at dusk (swarming)

Q

What is oscillation?

A
  • Oscillation of sound receiver act as active
    mechanical amplification
  • Reminiscent of mammalian cochlear amplifier

Q

What are distortion products?

A

In the case of male mos, they will take the tone of the female sound (tone 1 ) and other noise (tone 2) and create a distortion product. Distortion products are predictable and normally the male and female are not tuned to the distortion product (top graph) but when it’s mating time, frequency of distortion products is now tuned for the male mos by overlapping.

Q

What is the JO of the mos? and what channels does it contain?

A

‘inner ear’
contained mechnically gated channels to transduce to an electrical signal

17
Q

What is an attractant for mos to be used as a control

A

carbon dixoide co2
