How does the M775 fuze work?
The safety pin is removed immediately before loading the M769 into the M224/M224A1 Light Weight Crew Mobile System (LWCMS). Upon firing, the acceleration moves the setback pin rearward against a spring, releasing a slider, which holds the striker in its rearward position. Once the striker is released, it travels upward allowing the ball bearings to be forced into central alignment between the striker and the primer. Upon impact, the striker is driven into the ball bearings which initiate the primer, igniting the pyrotechnic smoke cartridge. The pyrotechnic smoke cartridge in the fuze produces a flash, audible sound and cloud of smoke, to simulate the HE function. Upon functioning, the hole plugs are expelled from the holes in the base of the projectile, allowing the smoke cloud to vent through the holes.

What is the smoke effect of the 81mm RP Smoke round ?
At a deployment height of 175m above the ground, the payload of 28 red phosphorous (RP) wedges are base ejected. Three cartridges will provide effective ground screening for a duration of five minutes under ideal atmospheric conditions.
How does the the M734A1 Multi Option Fuze work?
- Fuze set prior to launch
AFTER LAUNCH - Setback sensor moves rearward (setback) and releases first rotor lock (zigzag device)
- As the setback sensor retracts rearward, it releases a spring interlock on a mechanical gear reduction train (stops wind from premature arming)
4.Setback sensor is locked rearward after max setback achieved
DURING FLIGHT - Air ingested through the venturi drives the turbine and escapes through the bottom of the ogive
- Turbine alternator assembly generates electrical energy to power the fuzes electronics package
- Rotation of the turbine alternator shaft also drives a mechanical gear reduction train which retracts the second rotor lock (jackscrew)
- A predetermined number of turns of the gear train is required to retract the second rotor lock from engagement in the S&A rotor
- The delay in disengaging the second rotor lock results in a minimum mechanical arming distance of 100 metres
- On release of the second rotor lock and driven by the influence of the rotor spring, the rotor rotates 180°.
FULLY ARMED
Functions via PROX/IMP/DLY
