Mortal suffering [QUOTES] Flashcards
Book 1: the Trojan men face the storm
“Wherever the Trojans looked…
“Wherever the Trojans looked, death stared them in the face”
Mortal suffering questioned by Venus in book 1
““What crime have the Trojans…
“What crime have the Trojans committed that they should suffer all this loss of life” = so heavy was the cost of founding the Roman race - everything links back to this statement at the opening of the epic
The suffering of the Trojans has been relentless
“misfortune is now hounding…
“misfortune is now hounding these men from disaster to disaster” RELENTLESS
[book 1] Aeneas reaction to the mural depicting the trojan war
“Aeneas groaned from the depths of his heart to see the armour stripped off him [Hector]”
Why is the depiction of the Trojan war in book one significant (esp in terms of a comment about human suffering)
- The first mention of Aeneas/ any kind of reaction since the description began. Brings it back to reality - people are still suffering - makes it more real: we see the suffering first hand rather than just tales or depictions of battles
- Literally set in stone = more real
- On public display - heightens the suffering
- Monument to Homer? / putting the Iliad to bed?
