  • Themes introduced: war, man, fate
  • Juno is angry at the trojans as they sail towards Italy
  • Juno calls on Aeolus to create a storm on the Trojans and they eventually reach land: the shore of Libya
  • Venus pleads to Jupiter to end the Trojans’ suffering but he assures her that they will reach Italy: fate says so
  • Mercury is sent down by Jupiter to make sure Carthage is hospitable to the Trojans
  • In the woods Venus appears to Aeneas in disguise as a Spartan girl out hunting: she explains how Dido had become queen
  • Dido welcomes Aeneas and his men
  • Venus sends down Cupid (looking like Ascanius) to infect Dido with lust for Aeneas

BOOK 1: Jupiter’s prophecy

  • Aeneas will win a great battle and found the city of Lavinium
  • his son, Ascanius, also known as Iulus, will found Alba Longa, near the future site of Rome
  • and Romulus will eventually found Rome itself, which will conquer the world, including Greece.
  • Juno will come to love the Romans
  • at last a Trojan caesar named Julius, after Aeneas’s son Iulus — not Julius Caesar, but his heir by adoption, Augustus — will bring an age of peace
