Characterisation of the gods Flashcards
Juno Book 1: indignation
“here I am..
“Is there no one..”
“here i am, Queen of the Gods…Is there no one left who worships the godhead of Juno?”
Feeling of indignation and self-importance - 3rd person. - could also feel somewhat sorry for her?
Juno in Book 1: determined & scheming
“Whip up your winds….
“Whip up your winds. Overwhelm their ships and sink them. Drive their fleet in all directions and scatter their bodies over the sea” - short and to the point = determination in her schemes.
-and offers Aeolus a nymph called Deiopea in return
Book 1: Aeolus’ answer to Juno’s command
“Your task, O queen….
“Your task, O queen, is to decide your wishes; my duty is to carry out your orders”
Shows there was no element of begging from Juno - merely her authority exerted is cause for an obligation to carry out her commands
“my power over storm and cloud comes from you” - he is where he is because of Juno
Venus in book 1 disguises herself when she comes to Aeneas
“why am i never allowed…
Aeneas: “Why am i never allowed to take your hand in mine, to hear your true voice and speak to you as you really are?”
Violation of Dido’s wishes
“a heart that had long been…
“A heart that had long been at peace and long unused to passion”
perhaps suggest a sense of violation - the gods are forcing this on her just because of their power despite the fact she is not used to/ ready for/ doesn’t want it
