Morphology & Semantics Flashcards
What is “arbitrariness of the sign”?
A fundamental principle of Linguistics that states that there’s nothing intrinsic about the sound sequence
Onomatopoeia
The formation of a word whose sound replicates to a recognizable degree the sound of the thing or action that it represents, such as hiss, smack, or cuckoo.
What are morphemes?
A unit of meaning that cannot be analyzed into smaller such units.
Free Morphemes vs Bound Morphemes
A Free morpheme can stand alone, as a word in its own right while a Bound morpheme can occur only in combination with other morphemes
What are over-generalization / over-regularization errors?
Refers to grammatical errors that usually start in the early stages of a child’s language development where language rules are applied too generally, rather than according to the idiosyncrasies
