Morphology
the study of words and their parts. each word is made of morphemes, which are the smallest unit if meaning within a word

= Affixation
the use of affixes (including either prefixes or suffixes) to create new words (neologisms).
ex. ‘government’, adding
‘-ment’ to ‘govern-‘

= Abbreviation
shortened forms of words or phrases. they can include shortenings, initialisms and acronyms

= Shortening
the abbreviation of a word by reducing its length.
ex. ‘all caps’ is the shortening for ‘all capitals’

= Compounding
the process of joining two or more whole words to create a single word.
ex. bookcase

= Blending
the process of combining two or more words , where at least one word has undergone a form of abbreviation before being joined.
ex. ‘kidult’ (kid + adult)

= Backformation
the process of creating a new word by removing what is falsely perceived to be an affix from an existing words.
ex. ‘televise’, which was backformed from ‘television’.

= Conversion of word class
involves changing the class or role of a word, without changing its morphology.
ex. ‘email’ which was a noun but is now a verb

= Initialism
a form or abbreviation, cannot be pronounced as a whole word.
ex. VCE

a form of abbreviation, pronounced as a new word, as a whole word.
ex. ANZAC
