Derivation
Affixational process that forms a word with a meaning/category distinct from base
Class 1 affix
Trigger changes in consonant, vowel or stress placement
Class 2 affix
phonologically neutral
Which comes first? Class 1 or 2 affix
Class 1 comes first, class 2 cannot intervene between class 1 and root
Compounding
Combination of two already existing words
Endocentric compound
Denotes subtype of its rightmost word
Exocentric compound
Meaning of compound doesn’t follow it’s parts
Inflection
Modification of word to indicate its grammatical information

Replacing morphine with entirely different morphed to indicate grammatical contrast

Morpheus that cannot stand alone and must be pronounced with another word (host)
Conversion/zero derivation
Assigning new syntactical category to an existing word without changing anything
Clipping
Shortening of multisyllabic word
Blends
Created from nonmorphemic parts of two words
E.g. Brunch
