Opiate R agonist-hyperpolarization of interneurons and decreased release of neurotransmitters responsible for the transmission of pain impulses to the thalama and cerebral cortex

Adult Dose
0.1mg/kg IV/IO/IM (single max dose 10mg), may repeat q 5 min to total of 20mg, titrated to pain relief and if systolic BP is >100mmHg

Pedi Dose
0.1mg/kg IV/IO (single max dose 5mg), may repeat 0.05mg/kg (single max dose 2.5mg) q 5 min to total of 3 doses

Precautions
-Morphine causes reduced chemoreceptor responsiveness to increases in CO2 which may lead to respiratory depression
-Caution with patient with hypersensitivity to analogs of mophine

Drug-drug interactions
Additive effects (CNS depression) when given with antihistamines, antiemetics, sedatives, hypnotics, barbiturates, and alcohol
