Mori and Ari Flashcards
What is the aim of Mori and Ari’s study
To replicate and improve upon Asch’s study by having no actors + using males and females
What was the method of Mori and Ari’s study
Everyone was a participant and told to say which lines matched. One person had differently filtered 3D glasses so saw different lines. Included 104 Japanese students split in groups of 4. Answers were said and true participants went 3rd in group
What were the findings of Mori and Ari’s study
Males didn’t conform but women conformed 4.4/12 times, similar amounts as Asch’s study
What were some conclusions drawn from Mori and Ari’s study
Men not conforming - generational changes
Conformity in women due to different social role
Participants knowing each other
Cultural factors (japan = collectivist)
What are the strengths and weaknesses of Mori and Ari’s study
Strength-
used people who know each other so more accurate/representative of real life
Help re-examine Asch’s studies where you can’t use confederates
Weakness -
only conducted in Japan = collectivist society so can’t be generalised to other cultures
Low mundane realism - wouldn’t be asked to do that normally
