What is a transfered epithet
When a term that rightly describes one thing in a situation is applied to something else instead
ex: children ardent for some desperate glory
What is synesthesia
A transfered epathet having to do with different kinds of sensory descriptions
What is personification
Attrubution of human characteristics to non-human things
What are puns
Word play on multiple meanings on words, for comedic effect
What is an aside
A short speech not intended to be heard by all or some of the characters on stage
What is a soliloquy
Lengthy speeches by characters to themselves or the audience where they express their innermost feelings
What is dramatic irony
When the audience knows information unknown to some or all characters in a story
What is inverted syntax
The reversal of the expected word order: subject, verb, object
What is parralelism (or isocolon)
The use of similar gramatical structure to present ideas in a balanced way
What is chiasmus
Analogous elements are repeated in reverse order (sentence mirrored)
What is epistrophe
Repetition of a word or phrase at the end of series of sentences, clauses, or lines (opposite of anaphora)
What is anadiplosis
Repetition of a word or phrase from the end of one phrase at the beginning of the next
