What is intertextuality
The way in which one text meaning can be informed by other texts
What is an allusion
References to other texts, historical figures, and events (deliberate intertextuality)
What is an epigraph
A quotation used to introduce a text or a part of a text
What is first person narration
The speaker is a character within the fiction, using “i” or “we”
What is second person narration
Narrator uses the second person pronoun “you”
What is third person narration
Narrator uses the 3rd peson prponouncs, “she” “he” “it” and “they”
What is verbal irony
A cpontrast between what someone says and what they really mean
What is situation irony
Suprising contrast between expectation and reality
What is “In medias res”
Beginning a story with major events already underway
What is a subplot
A series of events in a story less central than its main plot
What is a motif
A recurringf elemnt in a literary work
What is foreshadowing
When a story provides a subtle hint of a future plot development
What is juxtaposition
Elements of a story are told side by side to compare and contrast
What is a foil
A character who emphasizes the traits of another character by contrast
What is a paradox
A statment or situation that seems impossible
