More Life Cycles Flashcards
What are some similarities between vascular seedless plants and bryophytes?
Spores are the dispersal stage
Sperm must swim to the egg
What is a homosporous spore?
All spores look the same and are he same size. They develop into gametophytes that look the same
What is a heteropsoprous?
Produces two different types of spores, one big and one small. Develop into male and female gametophytes
What is a sporophyll?
A leaf with sporangia on them
What is the microsporangia?
Produces and houses microsporocytes which undergo meiosis to become 1N micro spores
What is the megasporangia?
Houses and produces megasporocytes which undergo meiosis to produce 1N megaspores
How are mega and micro spores dispersed?
The wind
What is the advantage of a sporophyte dominant generation?
Increased size leads to increased spree producing capacity
Increased size leads to better spore dispersal
What is feature unique to heteropsoprous plants besides the two types of sprorangia?
The gametophytes develop within the spore all.
The spore must contain all nutrients for gametophyte to develop. Nutrients comes from sporophyte parent
What is the advantage of self contained spores with the gametophyte developing inside the spore wall?
Enhances survival of gametophyte
What is the advantage of having different sized spores?
Bug spore supports development of big female gametophyte which is necessary to support development of new gametophyte
Small gametophyte only produces sperm
What is the dominant stage in vascular seedless plants?t
The sporophyte
What generation is dominant in vascular seedless plants?
Sporophyte (2N)
What lifecycle does a charophytes have?
Haploid
Do plant gametophytes produce gametes by meisosis?
No
