Mordern material Flashcards
What material contains cells with liquid crystals inside and when a voltage is applied, the crystals go dark?
How have they been developed?
Liquid Crystal displays
This affect is caused by the molecular arrangement of the crystal
They have been developed by splitting pixel into 3 subpixels -RGB filters
By controlling and varying the voltage, up to 256 colours can be created on a laptop screen
What are the advantages of liquid crystal displays?
What are the disadvantages of liquid crystal displays?
Consumes little energy Very sharp picture Expensive to produce and easily damaged Pixels can become dead creating blank parts on the screen Motion bluuurrrrrr
What material absorbs and stores light energy during the day and then slowly releases the energy as light?
What are the main uses?
Phosphorescent pigments
Can be manufactured into paints and inks
Watches to be seen at night
What material emits radiation as light by passing electricity over two?
Electroluminescent lighting
It rapidly charges the crystals
What are the advantages of electroluminescent lighting?
What are the disadvantages of electroluminescent lighting?
No external connection needed
Low wattage
Can be made into long flat strips or string
Lightweight
Durable
Works in long temperature range
Not practical for general use - street lighting
If you did, it would use up lots of electricity
