Metals Flashcards
What is a ferrous metal?
What is an alloy?
Metal containing iron - steel
Mixture of two or more metals - stainless steel and duralumin
Name and state properties of a ferrous metal
Steel Lightweight Easy to mould Magnetic Recyclable Takes a lot of energy to mine and heated in furnace Cars, food tins, aerosol cans
Name and state properties of non ferrous metals
Aluminium
Good strength to weight ratio, doesn’t rust
Easy to recycle- less energy that extracting
Lots of energy to extract, has a flavour to it
Soft metal
Cans, bike frames
Tin
Easy to mix with other metals, low melting point, not toxic, doesn’t corrode rapidly
Contains impurities
Food and drink tin cans
Name and state properties of alloys
Stainless steel
Resists corrosion, high quality surface finish, high impact resistance, lightweight, low maintenance, recyclable
Hard to mould, hard to machine, expensive
Duralumin
Strength to weight ratio, malleable, casts well hard, tough, resists corrosion, performs in high temperatures
Can suffer from corrosion
Becomes brittle through use
Advantages of using metals for packaging
Added security to products Can hold liquid Can be made to any shape and size Embossed and debossed- surface texture Can be printed on or paper label stuck onto it
