Moray 1959 experiment 2 Flashcards
what was the aim?
to test whether an affective cue (one with a strong meaning like their name) would penetrate the block and be attended to
what were the affective cues and what passages were they used in?
‘ John smith, change to your other ear’ or ‘John smith you may stop now’. they were used in passages III, VII and X= 3,7,10
what were the non affective instructions and what passages were they used in?
‘change to your other ear’ or ‘all right, you may stop now’ . they were used in passages I, V, and VIII= 1,5,8
what was the task?
- p’ shadowed 10 short passages of light fiction- each being a different condition with a different set of instructions either at the start or end of passage, or both
- in all cases, the passage began with an instruction for the p’s to listen to their right ear
- in two passages ( VIII and X) the initial instruction was immediately followed by a warning that the p’s would be instructed to change ears. they were also told their responses were recorded and they should make as few mistakes as possible
( all wore headphones, listened to a male voice of around 130 words per min)
what passages were given no instructions throughout the task?
II, IV, VI and IX = 2,4,6,9
what was the IV?
whether the instructions were affective/ non affective
what was the DV?
the frequency with which the instructions were heard when asked in between the passages and if they actually followed instructions by changing ears
what was the reserach method?
lab experiment
what was the sample?
12 undergraduate students and research workers of both sexes
what were the results?
AFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONS
no. of times given - 39
no. of times heard- 20
NON AFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONS
no. of times given- 36
no. of times heard- 4
what did Moray conclude?
the p’s name did indeed break through the block on the rejected message. this supports the claim that a person will hear instructions if they are presented their own name.
what measures design was used?
repeated measures design
