Moray 1959 experiment 1 Flashcards
what was the aim of this experiment?
to test cherry’s original results more rigorously
what did Colin Cherry do?
noted that no matter how deep in conversation you might be at a cocktail party, your named being said in another conversation would draw your attention. Moray wanted to test this
what was the sample?
made up of undergraduate students and research workers of both sexes. Moray doesn’t provide a sample size for his first experiment
what research method was used?
a lab experiment- standardised and high control
what was the task?
a dichotic listening task that required the p’s to shadow one message while two messages were played to them, one in each ear
( wore headphones and listened to a man who spoke around 130 words per min)
what happened in the experiment?
- p’s heard a short list of simple words repeated 35 times in the unattended ear whilst they shadowed a prose message in the attended ear
- at the end of the shadowing task p’s were asked to recall all they could remember of the rejected message
- approx 30 secs after the completion of that task p’s were given a recognition task of 21 words -7 of these were from the shadowed message and 7 were from the rejected message - last 7 were random but similar words
what was the IV?
there were three conditions of the IV- the shadowed message, the rejected message and the control
what was the DV?
measured in two ways- p’s recalling as many words from the rejected message as possible and then the recognition task of 21 words
the results ?
7 words from shadowed message- mean words recognised was 4.9
7 words from rejected message- mean words recognised was 1.9
7 similar words- mean words recognised was 2.6
what did Moray conclude?
in a situation where a subject directs his attention to the reception of a message from one ear and rejects a message from the other ear, almost none of the verbal content of the rejected message is able to break the block set up.
what measures design was used?
repeated measures design
