what is morality?
principles and standard determining which actions are right and wrong.
what is absolute morality?
not allowing any exceptions to an ethical code.
what is relative morality?
all ethical codes are matters of personal choice. (allowed leniance dependant on the situation at hand).
what is utilitarianism?
good is when the greatest happiness for the greatest number (of people involved) is achieved)
what are situation ethics?
a good decision is the most loving decision for the people involved.
what is natural law?
good is achieved by always fulfilling the 5 purposes of life.
what are advantages to absolute morality?
(1) easy to follow (fixed rules)
(2) keeps society ordered
(3) can be applied across the world
what are advantages to relative morality?
(1) easy to adapt
(2) acknowledges unique situations
(3) allows individuals freedom to make decisions
what are disadvantages to absolute morality?
(1) too rigid - no freedom
(2) cannot adapt to changing - no lenience
(3) doesn’t consider needs of the individual
what are disadvantages to relative morality?
(1) allows people to break laws
(2) gives too much freedom
(3) no guidance on how to act
