one aim of punishment is protection which aims to protect people from be coming victims of crime. for example, a prison sentence helps remove a criminal from society and innocent people are prevented from suffering from their wrongdoings.

one aim of punishment is retribution, which aims to get revenge on the person who committed the crime. for example christians may do this as the old testament says “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth”.

one aim of punishment is deterrance, which aims to put people off crime altogether. for example, the death penalty is used in america to prevent people from committing murders so they don’t die themselves.

one aim of punishment is reformation, which aims to help offenders realise why they committed the crimes, and encourage them to never do it again. for example, rehabilitation centres help some criminals overcome addiction or the need to commit crimes and become better versions of themselves.

one aim of punishment is vindication which aims to show that laws are upheld and respected by society. for example this shows society that without law and order theres chaos so there is reason that it should be followed.

one aim of punishment is reparation which repairs the damage done by criminals. for example, some criminals may be punished by serving a sentence of community service which helps clean communities and makes them realise they have responsibilities in society.
