moral responsibility Flashcards
three types of actions
voluntary
involuntary
non voluntary
voluntary actions
only voluntary actions contribute to our virtues
only one we can assign praise or blame to
intend to do something
full knowledge
freely choose
even from desire we bear full responsibility
involuntary actions
two types of involuntary
done in ignorance- non voluntary
and done under compulsion (this one)
two types under compulsion
straight forward
eg no intention the actions were external and the person contributes nothing to the action therefore lacks agency and the person is not responsible
mixed
eg the action in that moment was in control ie they decided to take the action instead of the alternative but was compelled and didnt really choose or intend these actions. because there was agency the person is at fault but take in circumstance - forgiven and pardoned
non voluntary actions
done from ignorance
we don’t know all the facts we misinterpret or misunderstand the situation
we responsible?
eg regret and wished we acted differently - the action was against our intention still responsible but forgiven and pardoned
eg no regret and didn’t wish we acted differently- judged and fully responsible as if voluntary action.
