Moraines Flashcards
1
Q
What is terminal moraine?
A
Found at the snout; Consist of a ridge of material; At right angles to the direction of ice advance; Steep sided; Up to 50/60m; Crescent shaped; Unsorted ablation material.
2
Q
What is moraine?
A
Lines or a series of mounds of material, mainly running across glacial valleys.
3
Q
How are terminal moraines formed?
A
When the ice melts during a period of snout standstill and the material it has been carrying is deposited.
4
Q
What are recessional moraines?
A
As the glacier retreats, it is possible for a series of moraines to be formed along the valley, marking points where the retreat halted for some time.
5
Q
What are push moraines?
A
If the climate cools for some time, leading to a glacial advance, a previously deposited moraine may be shunted up into a mound known as a push moraine.
