Drumlins Flashcards
How big are drumlins
As long as 1.5km and as tall as 50-60m.
What are their characteristics?
> Steep stoss, sloping lee
>Elongated in the direction of ice advance with the stoss at the upstream and lee at the downstream.
How are drumlins found?
In groups called swarms.
What are drumlins formed from?
From unsorted till.
Where are drumlins found?
On low land plains eg Scotland lowlands; many are found at the lower end of glacial valleys.
How are they formed?
Most common idea is that they are the result of the ice being over loaded with debris; it reduces its capacity to carry and deposition occurs at the base of the ice. Once the material is deposited it is streamlined by further ice advance. There could also be pre-existing sediment that is caught up in the streamlining process.
What are drumlins?
Smooth, oval-shaped small hills, egg shaped.
