Method of training
Specific training for new employees
Helps new employees settle in and learn about the organisation
Depending on the job/business may be a few hours, a day or several weeks
May include tours and introductions to different departments
On the job training
Training provided on site in the workplace
Takes place in work time
May involve external trainers
Existing staff can train others
Off the job training
Training provided off site and away from the workplace
Employees may attend a training centre
Employees may attend college
Apprenticeship
This combines on the job and of the job training
Most often used in trades such as plumber, electrician etc
Employee combines work with study
May work four days on the job and one day at college[off the job]
Retraining
This is when a job disappears and employees need to be trained to do another job
Jobs may disappear because the business has changed
The introduction of ICT and/or automation can cause jobs to disappear
If employees are not retained to do another job they could be redundant
Upgrading
This is usually due to changing work practices
Employees need to update/upgrade/change their skills to do a different job
Changes in ICT often necessitate an upgrade of skills
Costs of training
Financial costs
Employees who are training are away from their jobs
Better trained staff may eventually leave to get a better job elsewhere
Some staff may be resisting to training
Quality can be affected whilst training is taking place
