Mood
The emotional atmosphere created by a literary work. It’s the feeling the reader
experiences through the setting, description, and events.
Tone
The author’s attitude toward the subject or audience, conveyed through word choice and
style.
Voice
The distinctive style or personality of the author or narrator that comes through in their
writing.
Diction
The specific word choices made by the author. Diction can be formal, informal,
colloquial, etc., and it shapes tone and mood.
Direct Characterization
The author tells the reader explicitly what the character is like
(e.g., descriptions of personality, appearance, or feelings).
Indirect Characterization
The author shows the character’s personality through their
actions, words, thoughts, appearance, and how others react to them.
