- these kids tend not to progress on to bipolar as often as once thougt

Major Depressive Disorder: epidemiology, risks, etiology
A
- 50% of pts are treated in US, less in rest of world
- median age of onset is 30 years (highest rates between 18 and 44)
- risks: female, unemployed, divorced, urban setting
- etiology: involves alterations in neural circuitry, not a chemical imbalance
- neuroendocrine dysfunction: hippocampal neurons shrink, cannot suppress cortisol

- 5 or more sxs have persisted for 2 weeks or more, and are a change from previous function, and pt experiences sad mood or anhedonia
- typical episodes last between 6 months and two years

- 2nd leading cause of death 25-34 yos
- 4:1 :: male:female
- more women attempt suicide than men
- attempts are very lethal in elderly
