Coma Flashcards
1
Q
Stupor
A
-sleep-like state from which pt can be aroused only by vigorous stimuli
2
Q
Coma
A
-sleep-like state where pt is unresponsive to external stimuli, and there are no sleep/wake cycles
3
Q
Decorticate Posturing
A
- flexion
- upper extremity flexion with lower extremity extension
- suggests lesion at hemispheres
4
Q
Decerebrate Posturing
A
- extension
- upper extremity extension with lower extremity extension
- suggests lesion at brainstem
- worse prognosis than with decorticate posturing
5
Q
Vegetative State
A
- where sleep/wake cycles re-establish but there is no sign of cognitive function
- thalamus damage
6
Q
Brain Death Criterion
A
- unresponsiveness
- cerebrally modulated motor responses are absent during application of painful stimuli
- brainstem reflexes are absent
- core body temp of 32.2 C of higher
- toxicology tests find no explanation
- adequate BP and pulse
- no voluntary movements
7
Q
Minimally Conscious State
A
- eyes open spontaneously
- sleep/wake cycles resume
- there are reproducible, though inconsistent, behavioral displays of perception, communication, or purposeful motor activity
8
Q
Hypoxic Ischemia Coma
A
- due to lack of blood supply or oxygen to the brain
- outcome is often worse than from trauma
