Usually sad, gloomy, and dejected mood, or markedly diminished interest and pleasure in everyday activities that is distinctly different from the person’s non depressed state
Depression
Unsually and persistently elevated, expansive or irratible mood that is distinctly different from the person’s non manic state
Marked impairment, requires hospitalization
Mania
Less severe variant of mania, no hospitalization
Hypomania

Similar to the criteria sets we used to determine if a client met the criteria for Panic attack or Agoraphobia
Mood Episodes
4 types of mood episodes
- Major Depressive Episode
- Manic Episode
- Mixed Episode
- Hypomanic Episode
Atleast 2 weeks the client feel depressed (or cannot enjoy life) and has problem with eating and sleeping, guilt feeling, loss of energy, trouble concentrating and thoughts about death
Major Depressive Episodes
For at least 1 week the client feels elated (or sometines only irratible) and maybe grandiose, talkative, hyperactive, and distractible. Bad judgement leads to marked social or work impairment
Manic Episode
The client has fulfilled the symptomatic criteria for manic and a major depressive episode but episode has lasted as briefly as 1 week
Mixed Episode
It is much like as Manic Episode however it is briefer and less severe, hospitalization is not required
Hypomanic Episode
Is a pattern of illness due to abnormal mood

2 major Depressive Disorders
- Major Depressive Disorders Single Episode
- Major Depressive Disorders Recurrent Type
Not severe enough to be called Major Depressive Disorder
Dysthymic Disorder
Client has depressive symptoms does not met the criteria for A, B or any diagnoses
Depressive Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)
Approximately 25% of mood disorder clients experience manic or hypomanic episodes.
All of these clients also have episodes of depression
The severity and duration of the highs and lows determine the specific mood disorder
Bipolar disorders
Must have at least 1 manic episode, also had a major depressive episode
Bipolar I
At least 1 hypomanic episode, plus at least 1 major depressive episode
Bipolar II Disorder
Repeated mood swings, but not severe enough to be called Major Depressive Episode or Manic Episode
Cyclothymic Disorder
Has a bipolar disorder does not meet the criteria for the bipolar diagnose
Bipolar Disorder (NOS)

Types of Specifiers for Most Recent Episode
- With Atypical Features
- With Melancholic Features
- With Catatonic Features
- With Postpartum Onset
Clients eat a lot, gain weight, sleep excessively, feel leaden and sensitive to rejection
With Atypical Features
Clients awake early and feel worse early in day, lose appettite and weight, feel guilty, slowed down or agitated
With Melancholic Features
Motor hyperactivity or inactivity
With Catatonic Features
Within month of having a baby
With Postpartum Onset
Types of Specifiers for Course of Recurrent Episodes
- With or without Full Interepisode Recovery
- With Rapid Cycling
- With Seasonal Pattern
That is the presence (of absence) of symptoms between Manic, Hypomanic, Mixed, or Major Depressive Episodes
With or Without Full Interepisode Recovery
Within 1 year, the client has had at least 4 episodes, meeting criteria for Major Depression, Mania, Mixed, and or Hypomanic episodes
With Rapid Cycling
Clients becomes ill at a certain times of the year
With Seasonal Pattern
A mood disorder can accompany boarderline, avoidant, dependent, and histrionic personality disorder
Personality Disorder
Common event, but when symptoms last longer than 2 months, a mood disorder might be present
