- Dissociative Identity Disorder
- Dissociative Amnesia
- Depersonalization/Derealization disorder
Associated with overwhelming experiences, traumatic events and or abuse that occured in childhood
Was previously referred to as a multiple personality disorder
Dissociative Identity Disorder
Involves not being able to recall information about oneself
Dissociative Amnesia
Unable to remember an event or period of time (most common type)
Localized
Unable to remember specific aspect of an event or some events within a period of time
Selective
Complete loss of identity in life history (rare)
Generalized
Dissociative amnesia symptoms
- confusion
- depressive symptoms
- flashbacks
- difficulty in relationship due to memory loss
- suicidal thoughts
Experience of unreality or detachment from one’s mind self or body
Depersonalization
Experience unreality or detachment from one’s surrounding
Derealization
Causes of depersonalization/derealization disorder
- physical abuse
- domestic violence (witnessing or experiencing it)
- accidents or natural disaster
- life threatening danger
- sudden death of a loved one
- a parent with severe mental illness
