A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, activity, or energy, lasting at least one week and present most of the day nearly every day
Criteria A, manic episode
Criteria B manic episode
During mood disturbance, 3 or more of the following symptoms are present and are a noticeable change from usual behavior:
1. Inflated self esteem/ grandiosity
2. Decreased need for sleep
3. More talkative
4. Flight of ideas
5. Distract-ability
6. Increase goal-directed activity
7. Engagement in risky activities

Criteria A, hypomanic episode
During the period of mood disturbance and increased energy and activity three or more of the following symptoms have persisted represented a noticeable change from usual behavior and have been present to a significant degree:
1. Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
2. Decreased need for sleep
3. More talkative than usual
4. Flight of ideas
5. Distractibility
6. Increase and goal directed activity
7. Excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences
Criteria B for manic and hypomanic episodes
Criteria C, hypomanic episode
The episode is associated with an unequivocle change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of the individual when not symptomatic
What is one way to differentiate between manic and hypomanic episodes?
Manic episodes persist for at least seven days hypromantic episodes last four. Manic episodes cause market impairments in social or occupational functioning hypomanic episodes do not.
Criteria A, major Depressive disorder
Five or more of the following symptoms have been present during the same two week period and represent a change from previous functioning at least one of the symptoms is either (1) depressed mood or (2)loss of interest or pleasure:
1. Depressed mood most of the day nearly every day
2. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure and all are almost all activities most of the day nearly every day
3. Significant weight loss or weight gain when not dieting.
4. Insomnia
5. Psycho motor agitation or retardation
6. Fatigue or loss of energy
7. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt
8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate
9. Recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation without a specific plan

What are the two criteria ( A & B)for bipolar 1 disorder?
A. Criteria have been met for at least one manic episode
B. At least one manic episode is not better explained by schizophrenia schizo affective disorder.

A: criteria have been met for at least one hypomanic episode and at least one major depressive episode

There have never been a manic episode
For at least two years (at least one year wchildren )there have been numerous periods with hypomanic symptoms that do not meet criteria for a hypo manic episode and numerous periods with depressive symptoms that do not meet criteria for a major depressive episode
