Unconscious, non-problem solving function, stable and associated with personality and age.
What type of episodes occur in Bipolar I?
At least 1 manic episode, and any number of hypomanic and major depressive episodes.
What type of episodes occur in Bipolar II?
No manic episodes ever, at least 1 hypomanic episode and at least 1 major depressive episode
What are the two key differences between Bipolar I and Bipolar II?
(1) Intensity of manic episodes
BPI = periods of severe mania
BPII = periods of less severe hypomania
(2) Prevalence of major depressive episodes
BPI = major depressive episodes is not a dx requirement
BPII = at least 1 major depressive episode for dx
What are differences in suicide risk between Bipolar I and Bipolar II?
While prevalence rates of lifetime suicide attempts appear higher in BPI, the lethality of attempts may be higher in BPII.
What is the statistic for suicide risk in BPII?
1/3 of individuals with BPII report a lifetime history of suicide attempt.
