- rapid cycling (4 or more episodes of acute mania in 1 year)

A
- Pt will receive muscle relaxant succinylcholine (Anectine)
- Pt may experience Memory loss, Nausea, or Tachycardia

-Prozac
A
- SSRI’s prevent serotonin from being reabsorbed back into nerve cells in the brain
- Prolongs mood lightening effect
- Used for Major Depression

-Prozac (Side Effects)
A
- Can Cause suicidal thoughts
- CNS Stimulation (Agitation, Insomnia, anxiety may occur)
- Sexual dysfunction
- Weight loss (early therapy) followed by weight gain (late)
- Serotonin Syndrome (2-72 hrs after start of treatment)

- May be lethal
- Manifestations include:
- Confusion, abdo pain, diarrhea, agitation, fever, anxiety, hallucinations

Tricyclic Anti-Depressant
-Elavil
A
- Works by preventing serotonin and norepinephrine from being reabsorbed
- Used for Depressive disorders

- Sedation (take before bed)
- Do not take w/ alcohol
- Chew sugarless gum for anticholinergic effects
- Increase fiber and fluids
- Decreased Seizure threshold
- Orthostatic Hypotension

-Nardil (Precautions)
A
- Processed meats, beer, wine, aged cheese or anything with TYRAMINE must be avoided to minimize chance of Hypertensive Crisis

-Nardil (Drug Interaction with Prozac)
A
- 5 weeks should be allowed between stopping Prozac and starting and MAOI to avoid possibly lethal complications

-Wellbutrin
A
- Acts by inhibiting dopamine uptake
2. Used to treat depression

- Headache, dry mouth, GI distress, constipation, Tachycardia
- SEIZURES
- Contraindicated w/ seizure disorder or head injury

-Andi-Depressant Med Education
A
- Effects of Med may not be experienced for 1 to 3 weeks
- Continue therapy after improvement of manifestations
- Sudden discontinuation can cause relapse - Med can increase suicide risk during initial treatment
- usually seen in clients under 25 years old
