Involves a clinically significant Major Depressive Disorder change in functioning involving a
range of DEPRESSIVE
symptoms, including depressed mood and/or loss of interest and pleasure on all activities for a period of at least 2 WEEKS
- Episodic symptoms tend to dissipate over time
- Subclinical Depression Sadness plus 3 other symptoms for 10 days
Individuals in the midst of a Major Depressive episode may
experience PSYCHOTIC SYMPTOMS, specifically hallucinations and delusions
Psychotic Features
The presence and severity of accompanying ANXIETY
Anxious Distress Specifier
Predominantly depressive episodes that have several symptoms of mania
Mixed Distress Specifier
This specifier applies only IF the FULL CRITERIA for a major depressive episode have been MET, whether in the context of a persistent depressive disorder or not
Melancholic Features Specifier
Specifier that involves the
ABSENCE of movements or catalepsy
Catatonic Features Specifiers
Individuals with this specifier
consistently oversleep and overeat during their depression
and therefore gain weight
Atypical Features Specifier
Means “surrounding”, in this

Peripartum Onset Specifier
It accompanies episodes that occur during certain SEASONS
Seasonal Patter Specifier
Characterized by a number of depressive symptoms as well anxiety, emotional numbness, and denial due to DEATH of a loved one

Characterized by either CHRONIC MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER or a CHRONIC but milder form of DEPRESSION
Chronic Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
this disorder, people who experience MANIA will also experience DEPRESSION during their lifetime
