What are the contraindications for Singulair?

A

Montelukast is not indicated for reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthmatic attacks, including status asthmaticus. Do not replace oral or inhaled steroids with montelukast w/o tapering steroid dose. Singulair inhalation should not be used as mono therapy for exercise-induced asthma. Rare cases of systemic eosinophilia have been documented during therapy after the reduction or stopping of oral corticosteroids. Use with caution in nursing mothers. Pregnancy Category B

What should the RPh consult the patient on for Singulair?

A

This med should be taken regularly, even when the patient is asymptomatic. This is not intended to treat asthmatic attacks and patients should have appropriate measures at hand to treat attacks. Chewable tablets contain phenylalanine. If a dose is missed, take ASAP. Granules can be given PO or mixed with a spoonful of soft food.

What are the adverse effects of montelukast sodium?

A

headache, influenza, cough, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and dizziness. Rare cases include psychiatric disorders (agitation, aggressive behavior, abnormal dreams, depression, & suicidality).
