9g (60 actuations), 16g (120 actuations) 50mcg of fluticasone propionate is contained in each actuation of 100mg of suspension
What is the FDA approved indication for Flonase?
For the relief of the symptoms of seasonal and perennial rhinitis in and adolescents 4 yoa & older
What is the recommended starting dose for fluticasone propionate?
two sprays in each nostril (daily total dose, 200mcg) The same dosage divided into 100mcg given twice daily is also effective
What is approved for maintenance therapy in Flonase?
Lowering the dose to 100mcg (one spray in each nostril) once daily
What is the maximum daily dose of Flonase?
two sprays in each nostril (200mcg/day)
What are the drug interactions of Flonase?
Synergistic side effects occur when used with systemic corticosteroids
What are the contraindications/precautions for fluticasone propionate?
use with caution in pregnant or lactating women & in pt’s with tuberculosis infections of the respiratory tract, untreated fungal, bacterial, or systemic viral infections, ocular herpes simplex, or unhealed wounds of the nasal mucosa
What are the adverse effects of Flonase?
Nasal burning, epistaxis (bleeding from the nose), blood in nasal mucus, pharyngitis, nasal irritation, and headache
What is the pregnancy category for fluticasone propionate?
Pregnancy Category C
How long does it take for Flonase to begin working?
Therapeutic effects are not seen at one. Benefits are usually seen in a few days but may take as long as 3 weeks. If no improvement in that time, DC med & consult prescriber
What should pt do if they miss a dose of fluticasone propionate?
Take dose ASAP and return to normal dosing schedule
Where should Flonase be stored?
In a cool, dry place away from sunlight and children.
What are the patient consultations for fluticasone propionate?
Shake container well before use, clear nasal passages of secretions prior to use. Oral decongestants may be used if needed.
