23 deaths
Villages and homes destroyed by pyroclastic flows
Port and airport closed
Destroyed farmland and crops rom ash
What were some secondary effects?
Unemployment rose from 7% to 50%
Tourist industry stopped after the airport was closed
Population descreased as 5000 people left
What happened because of the population decreasing?
There was a shortage in variety of skills for work
What were two short term responses?
Immediate vacuationg from the places that were at highest risk and move to the north of the island
Tents from the UK sent
What were som long term responses?
£2400 offered to those who moved away from the island and were over 18
Trying to rebuild the tourism industry again
